In our continuous efforts towards energy conservation, we planned and executed a campaign to maximise the use of natural light on sunny days and switch off lights when unnecessary. The fascinating fact that optimising the use of daylight could lead to a reduction in lighting costs by 19% was the driving force behind this initiative.
The pupils were the primary participants in this activity, and they discovered the impact of classroom set-up on natural light levels and delved into understanding the optimal levels of light required in their classrooms.
Our first step was to involve the students in measuring the current light levels in their classrooms using a lux meter. This hands-on activity not only provided them with a practical understanding of light intensity but also enabled them to relate it to their classroom environment.
After we had established the baseline lighting levels, we organised an interactive workshop for students on how to best arrange their classrooms to increase natural light levels. This involved discussions on decluttering windows, arranging desks in relation to the source of daylight, and the potential benefits of lighter paint colours on the walls to reflect more light.
Post-workshop, students were encouraged to reconfigure their classrooms based on the newfound knowledge and again measure the light levels. This activity significantly increased their awareness of how small changes could lead to a more naturally lit classroom, thereby reducing the need for artificial lights during the day.
We then proceeded to launch the 'Switch Off Lights' campaign, where pupils were designated as 'Light Monitors.' Their role was to ensure that lights were turned off when there was ample natural light. Posters made by students were placed around the school, reinforcing the message and making everyone in the school aware of the campaign.
This exercise not only educated our pupils on the importance of natural light but also empowered them to actively contribute towards energy conservation within the school. We believe the skills and awareness they gained from this activity will continue to benefit them in their future endeavours towards sustainable living.
