We successfully carried out a lunchtime audit to identify the amount of food waste generated by our school. The process was engaging, revealing, and incredibly beneficial for our ongoing sustainability efforts.
Before commencing, we obtained the necessary permissions from the school administration and coordinated with the kitchen staff, who were instrumental in the entire process. We chose a typical school day for the audit, ensuring that the results would reflect a normal lunch routine without any special events skewing the data.
In preparation for the audit, we gathered all the essential materials: separate bins for different types of waste, protective gloves, weighing scales, and data recording sheets. We also assembled a dedicated team of volunteers to assist with sorting and weighing the waste, ensuring they were equipped with appropriate protective gear.
On the day of the audit, we positioned the bins in easily accessible locations and provided clear instructions to ensure waste was sorted correctly. We separated the waste into three categories: food waste, recyclable packaging, and non-recyclable waste. Our team of volunteers supervised this process, helping to ensure accuracy.
Once lunchtime concluded, we proceeded to weigh each bin, diligently recording the results. The data gathered offered a clear picture of the volume of food waste our school generated, an eye-opening realisation for many.
After the audit, we spent time analysing the results, which we then presented to the school community. The findings sparked numerous conversations about waste, sustainability, and personal responsibility. It was enlightening to see how the audit raised awareness about food waste and the need to address it.
The lunchtime audit marked the first step of our journey towards reducing our school's food waste. The data we gathered now serves as a benchmark for future initiatives aimed at waste reduction. Reflecting on the experience, it was gratifying to see our school community come together to take ownership of our environmental impact. We are now more prepared and motivated to pursue further actions in reducing food waste and promoting sustainability in our school.
